Spring is one of the most important seasons for lawn care in central North Carolina. The transition from winter dormancy to active growth sets the tone for how your lawn will look and perform all summer long. Here's a comprehensive checklist to help you get your property in top shape.
Early Spring (February–March)
The first step is a thorough cleanup. Remove fallen branches, leaves, and debris that accumulated over winter. This allows sunlight and air to reach the soil surface, which is critical for healthy grass growth.
Next, assess your lawn for bare spots, compaction, and thatch buildup. In the Sanford and Lee County area, our clay-heavy soils are particularly prone to compaction after winter rains. If you can't easily push a screwdriver into the soil, it's time for core aeration.
Mid-Spring (March–April)
This is the ideal window for your first fertilizer application. In central NC, warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia start greening up in late March to early April. A balanced fertilizer with pre-emergent weed control helps your lawn get ahead of crabgrass and other summer weeds.
If you have an irrigation system, now is the time for a spring startup inspection. Check for broken heads, leaks, and coverage gaps. Properties in Pinehurst and Southern Pines with sandy soils may need to adjust watering schedules earlier than those in Sanford's clay soils.
Late Spring (April–May)
By late spring, your lawn should be actively growing. This is when you want to establish your mowing schedule — typically weekly for most properties. Keep your mower blade sharp and follow the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade height in a single mowing.
This is also the time to start mosquito barrier treatments if you want to enjoy your outdoor spaces all summer. The warm, humid conditions in our area create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes starting in late April.
The Bottom Line
A strong spring start leads to a healthier, more resilient lawn all year. If this checklist feels overwhelming, that's exactly why our membership plans exist — we handle every step on the right schedule so you don't have to think about it.
