Ask any lawn care professional and they'll tell you: fall is the most important season for lawn health in North Carolina. What you do in September, October, and November directly determines how your lawn looks next spring and summer.
For Fescue Lawns (Cool-Season)
Fall is prime time for Fescue lawns. This is when you should:
Aerate and Overseed (September - October)
Core aeration followed by overseeding is the single best thing you can do for a Fescue lawn. The combination of relieved compaction, seed-to-soil contact, and ideal growing temperatures produces dramatic thickening.
Fertilize (September - November)
Fescue lawns should receive their heaviest fertilization in fall. We recommend 2-3 applications from September through November to build root reserves for winter and fuel spring green-up.
Continue Mowing
Keep mowing at 3.5-4 inches through fall. Don't let the lawn get too tall going into winter, as this promotes disease.
For Bermuda and Zoysia Lawns (Warm-Season)
Fall care for warm-season grasses focuses on preparation for dormancy:
Final Fertilization (September)
Apply a final fertilization in early September to build root carbohydrate reserves. Avoid nitrogen after October 1st, as it can delay dormancy and increase freeze vulnerability.
Lower Mowing Height Gradually
Gradually lower your mowing height through October to reduce thatch and disease risk during dormancy.
Apply Pre-Emergent (October)
A fall pre-emergent application prevents winter annual weeds like Poa annua from establishing in your dormant lawn.
Universal Fall Tasks
Regardless of grass type:
- **Leaf removal:** Don't let leaves smother your lawn
- **Soil testing:** Fall is ideal for testing and applying lime if needed
- **Irrigation adjustment:** Reduce watering as temperatures cool and growth slows
- **Winterize irrigation:** Schedule blowout before the first freeze
